Technical Corner

Finding changes in ordered and orderless elements

A unique benefit of DeltaXML is the ability to mix ordered and orderless (unordered) data in the same file. This is made possible with the use of an attribute, deltaxml:ordered="false", which may be added to any element within the document. To accurately control comparisons when you have orderless comparisons you will often use 'keys'. By assigning keys to elements in your file, you can ensure that the corresponding elements are always matched up whatever the extent of the changes. Keys provide extra precision and quality to your delta, so for example the same paragraphs will always be matched up. When your data is orderless keys are even more essential to ensure that corresponding data items are aligned correctly.

If you want to find out more information about keys, see the interactive demonstration of DeltaXML Core Features .

Preview chapter of the 5th edition of the XML Handbook

DeltaXML were invited to write a new chapter for the 5th edition of the XML Handbook, edited by 'the father of XML' - Charles Goldfarb. The new chapter, 'Change Management for XML, in XML' describes the issues in managing change in XML data and documents. More important, it outlines the opportunities that exist when change to structured XML documents can be represented in a structured XML format. Processing change becomes almost as easy as processing the original documents!

Later note: This is now published as Chapter 33 "Managing Change in XML Content".
